Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Silver Spring, Maryland - website
|
|
The Good Shepard parish wanted a new Worship Space to seat 300 persons which would give strong visibility from the heavily traveled street at the front of the site and connect to the existing parking lot at the rear of the site. The Worship Space expands upward and is naturally lighted from above by clerestory windows from the high ceiling which gives it a cathedral like appearance.
An ancillary wing was added to provide support facilities. The existing two story building was upgraded to provide handicapped accessibility and building code compliance.

The bold octagonal volume of the worship space is clearly expressed on the exterior. The original spire was repaired and reset atop the new cupola. Natural light enters at the cupola, clerestory and seating level.

Entry occurs along a sequence of spaces: beneath a gateway or oak trees to the plaza; into the high-ceiling commons for social interaction; through the tight, dim foyer; and finally, into the bright worship space with its soaring pyramidal ceiling and natural daylight.

The hipped roof and copper crown with cross symbolizes Christianity to travelers on a busy suburban highway. The corner skylights which span the full height of each corner, provides ample, natural light. Four more buildings of similar shape, as designed in the Master Plan by us, have since been completed.

This environmentally sensitive design employs a raised curvilinear wood deck for the main access from the parking lot to the Meeting House which allows a major intermittent stream to flow under while preserving related vegetation, surrounding trees and wildlife.

Lawrence Cook Associates designed this widely publicized initial multi-purpose facility which won local and national recognition for energy efficiency. Ten years later, we added a school and administration center following the original master plan.

Our feasibility study demonstrated a new grand worship space could be built and the existing worship space converted to a social hall for only a 20% increase in budget over the "remodeling only" option. The church gladly accepted this alternative.
